Frequently Asked Questions

What is a certified legal nurse consultant (CLNC)?

A certified legal nurse consultant is a Registered Nurse who by nature of her education and experience can guide and advise attorneys handling cases involving medical issues.

Why should an attorney use a CLNC?

A CLNC can save an attorney time and money. A CLNC is an expert in the review, analysis, and interpretation of medical records. He or she can identify and apply the relevant standards of care to the question presented and determine if a case is meritorious. This saves an attorney valuable time because it prevents the attorney from pursuing a case that has no merit. Medical experts charge more than twice what a CLNC charges to screen a case. In addition, medical experts generally do not screen for nursing issues. By using the services of a CLNC the attorney is assured a complete screening that includes medical and nursing issues as well. This is a more thorough analysis of the medical records at a much lower rate.

Why should an attorney use a CLNC to do medical research when the attorney has a paralegal?

A paralegal is very skilled in research and can locate the standards of care and medical literature to provide to the attorney. But the difference is that the CLNC will not only locate the relevant standards of care, but he or she will apply those standards to the question presented and determine if there were any deviations by the healthcare provider. In addition, the CLNC will locate the relevant medical literature, determine if it is authoritative and apply it to the case analysis.
